UK Romani Clans

With the Roma people, we see a commonality with other groups like the Maori. The word “Roma,” in their language, means “human being.” The word Maori is similar. All over the world, there are a smattering of peoples whose name means, “humans,” “people,” “human beings,” etc.

If a stigma has followed the Roman/Romani people from India, it is likely reflected in the Greek definition of a word they are also known as-Zingari. In Greek, this means “untouchable” and thus would be the lowest caste. They would have been seen as trying to “escape their fate,” so to speak, by leaving India to develop lives outside of the caste system to which they were born.
