As an ancient maritime goddess, the worship of Aphrodite likely followed the expansion of intercontinental trade.

Per legend, her original home was on the Island of Cyprus. However, I believe it was likely Egypt and then the culture spread to an area near ancient Sicily and Cyprus. Researchers have also found some evidence of worship by ancestors of modern Bulgarians.

“The Goddess Aphrodite was originally worshiped by the population that mostly inhabited the Balkan Peninsula, that is to say the “pelasgos” o protobúlgaros, known as the ancestors of present-day Bulgarians.”

Interestingly, while Aphrodite is known to have arrived in a sea mist, much like the Tuatha de Danaan, there is also indication that the Milesians worshiped her. This could be due to their seafaring or point, again, to an Iberian or Black Sea Steppe origin. This likely would have been in the form of the goddess, Agrimpasa.
