Church of Panagia

While it is thought that the temple the church was built on belonged to Athena or Demeter, the ties to Cyprus would point to Aphrodite. The fact that this connection was lost also underscores the attempts to remove Aphrodite as a major goddess.

Many, if not all, of the Churches of Panagia seem to be former pagan temples (particularly of goddesses) that were rebuilt as churches of the Virgin Mary.
